International Press Institute awards Palestinian journalist martyr Abu Dqa “Press Heroes 2025” award

The International Press Institute (IPI) today, Saturday, awarded Palestinian journalist martyr Maryam Abu Dqa the “Press Heroes 2025” award, in recognition of her courage in carrying out her journalistic mission and her sacrifice in conveying the truth.

The Vienna-based institute, in a statement reported by the Palestinian Shehab News Agency, noted that “the award is presented annually to journalists who demonstrate exceptional commitment to the values of press freedom and human rights despite risks and challenges.”

The statement emphasized that Maryam Abu Dqa represents a symbol of journalists who have sacrificed their lives while covering field events in Palestine.

On October 9, the International Press Institute and the International Media Support organization jointly announced awarding the “Global Press Freedom Hero” medal to the late Independent Arabia correspondent in Gaza, Maryam Abu Dqa, honoring her bravery and steadfastness in defending press freedom after she was killed in an Israeli strike targeting a hospital in southern Gaza last August.

Maryam Abu Dqa was among the most prominent Palestinian journalists who continued covering the aggression on Gaza despite the dangers, and she was martyred while reporting on attacks targeting journalists at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip.
