Iran’s FM SPOX: New Military Coalitions Will Not Resolve Yemen Crisis

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that forming new military coalitions would not help resolve the aggression in Yemen, arguing that similar alliances in the past had failed to achieve their objectives.

Speaking at his weekly press conference in response to a question about Pakistan’s reported participation in the Saudi-announced maritime coalition against Yemen, Baghaei said, “What is referred to as this coalition has precedents. A similar coalition was formed ten years ago and it did not succeed. The Yemen issue will not be resolved through such coalitions.”

He added that efforts should instead focus on building coalitions for peace rather than alliances aimed at harming Islamic countries, reaffirming Iran’s readiness to assist initiatives aimed at advancing a political solution to the aggression.

Saudi Arabia has announced a new maritime coalition in the Red Sea as it seeks to bolster the security of its shipping lanes amid the continuing impact of Yemen’s “blockade for blockade” campaign. The coalition comes after weeks of reported disruptions to Saudi maritime traffic, energy infrastructure, and air transport, following restrictions imposed by the Yemeni Armed Forces.

Sana’a maintains that the measures will remain in force until the blockade on Yemen is lifted, considering them part of a broader strategy to pressure Riyadh into ending its policies toward the country.
