Foreign Ministry addresses international community regarding crime in Al-Shariyah village, Bani Hushaysh

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates reiterated its call on Sunday for the formation of an independent international commission of inquiry into the Saudi enemy’s attack on civilian homes in the village of Al-Shariyah, located in the Bani Hushaysh District of Sana’a Governorate as well as other atrocities committed by the Saudi regime in Yemen over the past years.

This call was conveyed through formal communications addressed by the Ministry to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the UN General Assembly, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, member states of the UN Security Council and the UN Human Rights Council, all UN member states, the European Union, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the African Union, concerning the crime committed by the Saudi regime in Bani Hushaysh.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of international law and international humanitarian law, while simultaneously emphasizing Yemen’s legitimate right to defend its people, sovereignty, security, and national interests an inherent right guaranteed by international charters and laws.

In its communications, the Ministry noted that the Saudi regime committed a full-fledged war crime yesterday by targeting the village of Al-Shariyah in the Bani Hushaysh District of Sanaa Governorate. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of 33 civilians including eight women and 13 children and left 39 others wounded, among them 10 women and 13 children. It stated that the Saudi regime targeted inhabited homes, destroying them completely while people were still inside. Furthermore, it repeatedly targeted civilians, medical personnel, and rescue teams, and bombed the roads leading to the scene of the attack a flagrant and blatant violation of international humanitarian law.

The memoranda characterized this crime as a continuation of a series of systematic atrocities committed by the Saudi regime against civilians and civilian infrastructure since March 26, 2015. These actions have resulted in the death or injury of tens of thousands of civilians most notably women and children and the destruction of thousands of civilian assets, including homes, hospitals, schools, airports, factories, roads, bridges, farms, water reservoirs, markets, and mosques.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called upon the international community to break its silence, condemn this crime along with other atrocities committed in Yemen and exert pressure on the Saudi regime to halt its brutal aggression and lift its unjust blockade on the Yemeni people.
