Foreign ministry: Israeli aggression on Hezyaz power station dangerous escalation threatens peace, security in region

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates considered the Israeli aggression on Hezyaz power station in Sana’a province a dangerous escalation that threatens peace and security in the region and a flagrant and serious violation of the principles of international law and the UN Charter.

Foreign Minister Jamal Amer, in an urgent letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Security Council President Eloy Alfaro de Alba, High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, and UN Human Rights Council President Jürg Lauber, stressed that this aggression amounts to a full-fledged war crime under international humanitarian law.

Amer condemned in the strongest terms the military aggression and terrorist act committed by the Israeli enemy entity at dawn Sunday, by directly and deliberately targeting the power station, a vital civilian facility in Sana’a.

He explained that the Israeli enemy’s targeting of the station completely put it out of service, depriving millions of civilians in the capital and surrounding areas of electricity, which is essential for operating hospitals, water pumps, and other essential facilities.

The letter indicated that targeting civilian objects is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, which prohibit the attack or destruction of objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population and require parties to the conflict to distinguish between civilian and military targets.

It noted that the terrorist Israeli aggression comes within the context of the enemy entity’s failed attempts to pressure Sana’a to change its position and cease its military support for the oppressed Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the official and popular position of the Republic of Yemen, represented by the leader of the revolution, Sayyed Abdulmalik Badr al-Din al-Houthi, is a firm and principled position stemming from religious, moral, and humanitarian values. It will not change until the aggression is halted and the blockade on the Gaza Strip is lifted.

The United Nations and the Security Council are responsible for defending international peace and security, calling for an official and explicit condemnation of this aggressive act and the adoption of deterrent measures under Chapter VII of the Charter to ensure the non-recurrence of such crimes.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also warned that any hesitation or silence by the international community regarding this heinous crime will be interpreted as a green light for the Israeli enemy to persist in its terrorism and irresponsible complicity that undermines the credibility of the international system, threatens to push the region toward further escalation and tension in the Red Sea, and leaves the Yemeni response open to all options, the repercussions of which could extend to the entire international community.
