Israel has killed at least nine Palestinians in a new wave of attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip.
Five were killed, and several were wounded in a drone strike on al-Mawasi, west of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, on Sunday.
The area, previously designated by the Israeli military as a “humanitarian safe zone,” has repeatedly come under attack despite the presence of displaced civilians seeking shelter there.
In northern Gaza, three Palestinians, including a child, were killed in a similar strike targeting the Remal neighborhood of Gaza City. The Taj Mall was also targeted.
Two infants died on Saturday morning due to severe burns sustained in a fire at a displacement tent in al-Mawasi. The children were identified by Nasser Medical Complex as two-month-old Habiba Mohammed Zanoun and seven-month-old Aseel Abu Suhayban.
The fire reportedly broke out on October 30 while food was being prepared inside the tent. Both infants were admitted to intensive care but died the following morning. Aseel’s mother was also injured while attempting to rescue her daughter and remains hospitalized.
The tragedy highlights the devastating consequences of Israel’s blockade and the collapse of essential living conditions in Gaza.
Shortages of cooking gas and basic necessities have forced displaced families to prepare food over open flames inside overcrowded tents, exposing children and other vulnerable civilians to deadly fire hazards.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned in June that cooking inside displacement tents was a leading cause of fires, noting that materials such as fabric, cardboard and plastic sheeting allow flames to spread rapidly.
Gaza’s Government Media Office has estimated that more than 800,000 displaced Palestinians are living in tents unfit for habitation, with approximately 162,000 of the territory’s 270,000 displacement tents requiring immediate replacement.
The latest killings come amid continued bombardment, mass displacement, a crippling blockade and the systematic destruction of conditions necessary for civilian survival across the war-ravaged territory.
Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israel has killed over 1,570 Palestinians and wounded at least 5,680 as of October 29.
Marking the first anniversary of the ceasefire announcement, the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) says Israel has never stopped killing and injuring Palestinians or causing repeated displacement across Gaza.
