Expert: Trump may seek settlement with Iran, bypassing Israel, if war prolongs

Dr. Ahmed Wafiq Awad, head of the Mediterranean Center for Regional Studies, stated that the escalating US-Israeli war on Iran, and the ongoing briefing to the US Congress, are placing significant pressure on the Republican Party as the midterm elections approach. He added that US President Donald Trump is seeking a swift end to the war.

In an interview with Russia’s Sputnik radio station on Wednesday, Awad said: “If Trump fails to achieve a tangible result and the war drags on, he may pursue a direct settlement with the Iranians, bypassing the Israelis.”

He also pointed to a genuine division within Congress and widespread objections from the US public regarding the administration’s legal and security justifications for the war on Iran.

He noted the broad rejection of US statements that attempted to portray the war as a preemptive move, reflecting the nature of the debates within Congress, while emphasizing that Israel is the primary driver of this conflict.

He explained that a number of members of Congress oppose making a decision to go to war without consulting the legislative body and without legal justification, especially given the absence of any direct threat to the United States, and in line with the statement by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, that Iran is not developing a nuclear bomb. They warned of the potential damage to current and future American interests.

Awad concluded by saying that the significant influence of the Zionist lobby in supporting Israel is countered by the stance of the American public, which views this war primarily as an Israeli initiative, linking it to an attempt to cover up personal scandals such as the Jeffrey Epstein affair, while clearly rejecting dragging the United States into a new conflict.
