Yemen’s Strike on Saudi Oil Tanker Exposes Limits of Western Maritime Protection
The latest Yemeni naval operation targeting the Saudi oil tanker Amzan in the northern Red Sea has drawn widespread international attention and prompted acknowledgments from Saudi and Western maritime authorities, highlighting the difficulty of concealing the impact of Yemen’s maritime deterrence measures.
Shortly after the operation, which reportedly struck the vessel directly and triggered a fire onboard, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a vessel had been hit about 63 nautical miles west of Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. Unlike previous incidents in which authorities described damage as minor, the UK agency acknowledged that the incident resulted in a fire aboard the vessel.
London-based maritime publication Lloyd’s List subsequently reported that a Saudi National Shipping Company (Bahri) very large oil tanker had been hit off Yanbu in the Red Sea, causing a fire onboard.
Lloyd’s List also reported that several tankers operated by Bahri had come under attack by Yemeni forces since Yemen announced its maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia last month.
Bahri later confirmed that one of its tankers, Amzan, had been involved in a security incident in the Red Sea on Monday.
The acknowledgment marked a direct Saudi confirmation of the incident and the difficulties faced by Saudi shipping in navigating the Red Sea under the current maritime restrictions.
British maritime security company Vanguard Tech also reported that a Saudi-flagged vessel had been struck by a missile west of Yanbu, while maritime security firm Ambrey said the targeted vessel issued a distress call following the attack.
The sequence of acknowledgments has placed further attention on the effectiveness of the US and Western maritime security arrangements in the Red Sea, particularly as Saudi vessels have increasingly sought alternative routes to avoid areas considered high-risk.
The incident comes amid a broader escalation in maritime tensions following Yemen’s announcement of restrictions targeting Saudi shipping. Yemeni forces have previously reported targeting or blocking Saudi oil vessels in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea, while Saudi-linked shipping operators have increasingly resorted to longer and more costly routes to reduce exposure to attacks.
