Newsweek magazine reported on Thursday that, according to a new poll, 52% of registered American voters want Congress to impeach Donald Trump immediately.
According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, the magazine reported on Thursday that 40% oppose such a move. This poll, conducted by the Selinda Lake Group with financial support from two organizations opposed to Trump’s policies (particularly the war with Iran), surveyed 790 registered voters.
The results showed that even 14% of Republicans (one in seven) support initiating impeachment proceedings against Trump.
Democrats showed the highest support for impeachment, with 84% in favor and only 8% opposed, while independents also tended to support the move by a significant margin.
According to Newsweek, the poll was conducted amid escalating tensions due to the recent war with Iran and rising energy prices, which have increased public discontent. Many see impeachment as a way to halt controversial policies.
However, political experts emphasize that even with popular support, the chances of Trump’s impeachment succeeding in Congress are very slim, as Republicans still control majorities in both houses, and conviction in the Senate requires 67 votes.
The poll’s margin of error is 3.8%, reflecting the continued decline in Trump’s popularity. Previous polls have also shown that disapproval of the US president has exceeded 50%.
Calls for Trump’s impeachment have intensified among members of Congress. Democratic Representative Adalita Grikhalva wrote on the X platform: “Truce or no truce, Trump is clearly unfit to govern,” adding, “He is not in a position to serve as commander-in-chief and is endangering our national security. JD Vance, invoke the 25th Amendment.”
