Iran formally submitted on Sunday its response to the latest US proposal aimed at ending the war, according to the country’s state news agency, which affirmed the reply was delivered today through a Pakistani mediator.
Under the proposed framework, the current phase of negotiations would focus primarily on ending the conflict in the region.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokespersons had previously stated on several occasions that Tehran’s observations and positions regarding the US proposals would be conveyed after completing a comprehensive review and final drafting process.
Iran and the United States held two days of intensive negotiations in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, four days after Pakistan brokered a ceasefire to halt the US-Israeli aggression against Iran that began in late February.
Iranian officials said the talks later collapsed due to what they described as hardline American demands.
One of the central disputes in the ongoing negotiations remains the restoration of maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway in the Persian Gulf that has remained under Iranian control since the start of the aggression.
Tehran has indicated it is prepared to reopen the strait if the aggression ends permanently and the United States lifts what Iran describes as its illegal sanctions and blockade on the country.
Iranian authorities said the first phase of efforts toward a broader agreement should prioritize navigation and sanctions relief, while signaling readiness to discuss Iran’s nuclear program in later stages of talks with Washington.
