“Ain Al-Insaniya” Center Condemns Saudi Enemy’s Crime at Central Correctional Facility in Al-Jawf

The “Ain Al-Insaniya” Center for Human Rights and Development condemned, in the strongest terms, the heinous crime committed by Saudi enemy aircraft in targeting the Central Correctional Facility in Al-Jawf Governorate, a new crime added to the record of grave violations committed against civilians and civilian facilities in Yemen.

In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the Center pointed out that the crime of targeting the correctional facility resulted in the martyrdom and injury of a number of its inmates and visitors, including a woman who was visiting her husband, in addition to a child—a scene that reflects the extent of disregard for civilian lives and the fundamental rules and principles of international humanitarian law.

The Center affirmed that targeting a place designated for detaining prisoners constitutes an extremely serious crime, especially since the prisoners and visitors inside the correctional facility do not, by virtue of their presence in that place, constitute legitimate military targets. The presence of a woman among the victims while visiting her husband clearly reveals the scale of the danger that befell civilians.

The Center also stressed that the protection of persons deprived of their liberty is a fundamental obligation under international humanitarian law, and that prisoners, even during armed conflicts, enjoy guarantees of protection from killing, targeting, and inhumane treatment, noting that civilians visiting their loved ones inside places of detention must not have their lives endangered.

The “Ain Al-Insaniya” Center for Human Rights and Development held the Saudi enemy fully responsible for this crime and its resulting human losses.

It called on the United Nations and relevant international human rights and international humanitarian law organizations to break their silence on the crimes committed against civilians in Yemen, to work seriously to protect prisoners, civilians, and civilian facilities, and to take effective measures to ensure an end to their targeting.

The “Ain Al-Insaniya” Center for Human Rights and Development reiterated that the continued targeting of civilians and civilian facilities, including detention and correctional centers, constitutes a serious violation of the rules of international humanitarian law, and requires a clear and responsible international stance commensurate with the scale of these crimes.
