“Protection of Palestinian Journalists” condemns Zionist enemy’s targeting of journalists today in Gaza

The Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC) condemned in the strongest terms on Wednesday the targeting of journalist Abdul Raouf Sha’at along with two of his colleagues in an Israeli raid that targeted the vehicle they were traveling in in the Netzarim area in the central Gaza Strip today.

The Center stated in a statement  that “Sha’at” was targeted while performing his work with the “Egyptian Committee for Gaza Relief” in filming and documenting the stages of preparing new displacement camps established by Egypt in the Netzarim area.

The Center mentioned that journalist “Sha’at” was targeted along with his two colleagues directly while performing his work, and while he was in a vehicle bearing the logo of the “Egyptian Committee.”

The Center added that the identity of the vehicle and the nature of the work and tasks of the Egyptian Committee are known to the Israeli army, which highlights the enemy’s deliberate targeting of media teams, in a flagrant violation of the most basic laws and international conventions that guarantee the protection of journalists during armed conflicts.

The Center explained that the enemy continues to target journalists despite the ceasefire in effect in the Gaza Strip in October 2025, as the enemy has killed more than 6 journalists since the ceasefire.

The Center pointed out that the number of journalists killed by the enemy since the start of the genocide war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023 until today has risen to 260 journalists.

The Center called upon all relevant parties, led by the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, to urgently investigate the crime of assassinating journalists in the Gaza Strip, work to hold those responsible accountable, and pursue enemy leaders as war criminals before international justice.

The Center clarified that targeting journalists constitutes a war crime according to Article (79) of Additional Protocol I annexed to the Geneva Conventions of 1977, which stipulates the protection of journalists performing their professional duties in conflict areas as civilians. This targeting also constitutes a flagrant violation of Article (8) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which criminalizes deliberate attacks against civilians, including journalists.

The Center confirmed at the conclusion of its statement that impunity encourages the enemy to commit more crimes against journalists, calling on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities, work seriously to end the state of silence and complicity, and ensure the provision of effective protection for Palestinian journalists in the occupied territories.
