Husni Muhanna, the media officer for the Prosthetics and Polio Center in Gaza, announced that the Zionist war of extermination has resulted in approximately 6,000 amputations. He emphasized that this number represents an unprecedented humanitarian and health catastrophe and reflects the depth of the tragedy in Gaza.
According to the Palestinian news agency “Sanad” on Sunday, Muhanna explained in a press statement that the Prosthetics Center in Gaza currently relies on a small workshop for local production due to the severe siege and the systematic destruction of medical facilities and main buildings.
He noted that the enemy’s prevention of the entry of essential raw materials has completely paralyzed the center’s ability to produce prosthetics, especially upper limbs.
He confirmed that the shortage of components and assistive devices has created long waiting lists, which are becoming increasingly complex with the daily influx of new injured individuals. He emphasized that the process of fitting prosthetic limbs does not end with simply providing the limb, but also requires a thorough medical assessment, intensive physical therapy, and comprehensive rehabilitation programs—all of which are difficult to provide in the Gaza Strip due to the collapse of the healthcare system.
He pointed out that repeated waves of forced displacement, the destruction of road infrastructure, and the severe transportation crisis resulting from the fuel blockade have become major obstacles preventing the wounded and amputees from reaching the remaining treatment and rehabilitation centers.
According to the latest data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, approximately 6,000 amputations have been recorded, requiring urgent and long-term rehabilitation programs. Twenty-five percent of all amputations are among children, who face permanent disabilities at a young age.
The World Health Organization, in a previous report, estimated the number of amputations in the Gaza Strip during the first year of the war to be between 3,105 and 4,050 cases, describing them as “life-changing.” These cases also include brain and spinal cord injuries and severe burns. According to the latest data from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, rehabilitation services in the Gaza Strip have declined by 62% due to widespread destruction and a lack of equipment and resources. No rehabilitation center in Gaza is currently operating at full capacity.
