Government Condemns Trump Remarks on Mecca, Calls for Wider Islamic Response

Yemen’s Government condemned remarks attributed to Donald Trump regarding Mecca, considering them as offensive toward Islam’s holiest site and denouncing continued silence across the Islamic world in response.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the government said the reactions to Trump’s comments fell short of the responsibility owed to Islamic values, symbols, and sacred sites, characterizing the lack of response as unjustified in the face of repeated offenses.

The statement argued that repeated remarks targeting Islamic symbols and sanctities reflect entrenched hostility by the Zionist-American enemy toward Islam and Muslims.

It urged Arab and Islamic peoples to move beyond silence and publicly reject such statements, warning that continued inaction could encourage further escalation.

The government also criticized the positions of abandonment by many Arab and Islamic governments and accused them of failing in their responsibilities toward religion, the Ummah, and its sanctities.

It added that public mobilization in Yemen, including mass demonstrations held on Tuesday, represented a renewed expression of support for religious identity and solidarity with Islamic causes.

The statement follows controversy surrounding a recent remark by Donald Trump in which he used the term “Mecca” metaphorically in a political comment, saying that a future presidential library could become a “Mecca” for people who oppose America.

The remark drew criticism in Yemen and from some voices in the region, which viewed the use of the name of Islam’s holiest site outside its religious context as offensive and disrespectful.

The reaction also comes amid heightened regional tensions following months of confrontation involving the Zionist entity across multiple fronts and continued political polarization over US policies in the Middle East.

Against that backdrop, political and religious actors in Yemen framed the remarks as part of a broader debate over respect for Islamic sanctities and the role of public responses across the Islamic world.
